| Andrew was joined by Dr Monique Ryan MP, Australian Medical Association President-elect Dr Michael Bonning and Australian Society of Ophthalmologists President Dr Peter Sumich to discuss a motion calling for an independent authority to oversee the private health system. “I’m calling for an independent statutory Private Health System Authority to monitor and report on the financial sustainability of the sector, including premiums, benefit payouts and regional hospital viability,” Mr Wilkie said. “The Authority would also provide transparency around contracting arrangements between insurers, hospitals and practitioners, helping to ensure that bargaining power imbalances do not undermine access to care. “A strong public healthcare system must remain the cornerstone of healthcare in Australia. However, a sustainable private sector also plays a critical role in supporting access to care, reducing pressure on waiting lists and maintaining capacity across the health system. “That some private healthcare providers are struggling, while at the same time consumers are often complaining of soaring costs and gaps in services, points to a healthcare system in need of reimagining with much better regulation and oversight.” |
