The AEC’s announcement of new electorate boundaries is a bold and necessary change to fix what really was an increasingly shambolic set of boundaries in Tasmania. I’m continually impressed by the professional and impartial work of the AEC.
From a personal perspective, I’ve represented and served the same area for about 16 years and built up a strong relationship with the community, and for this reason it will be particularly sad to say goodbye to the people of Glenorchy when these changes take effect at the next election. Glenorchy is an incredible community full of some of the best of Tasmania, and I hope that their next federal MP gives them the attention they deserve.
But equally I’ll be thrilled to be given the chance to represent more of the south. It’s a fabulous part of Tasmania, somewhere I know well already as our family shack is down that way. My new community can be confident that I’ll work hard to represent and serve them as best I possibly can.
There’s no doubt that this change will make for a fascinating contest at the next election. I’m looking forward to it!
