I was deeply concerned to learn last night that the Government’s support package for Nyrstar is in jeopardy. The Hobart zinc works employs around 500 local workers and supports numerous contractors and suppliers across the State.
A second phase of support for Nyrstar’s smelters at Port Pirie and Hobart was always expected as part of the assistance package announced by the Federal Government, together with the Tasmanian and South Australian governments, last year. However, it now appears that disagreement over the continuing implementation of that plan is putting the package at risk. Meanwhile, workers and their families are left sweating about their future.
I have been in touch with Nyrstar today and am ready to assist in any way possible. The survival of the Hobart zinc works is not only important for the hundreds of people it employs and their families, it is also critical for Australia’s broader economic resilience and national security.
All four parties need to sort out any disagreements urgently.
