“On the 15th of May each year Palestinians around the world mark the Nakba, or ‘Catastrophe’. That is the forcible mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians by the State of Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
“What the past seven months have made abundantly clear, however, is that the Nakba isn’t consigned to the past. It is an ongoing project of the State of Israel under its current leadership, which is right now engaged in an intentional and systematic military campaign against the people of Gaza that goes well beyond what is warranted by the shocking events of 7 October. Indeed the International Court of Justice has found that there’s a plausible case that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
“This 76 years of displacement, occupation, and attempted genocide demands a just and lasting two-state solution. It’s beyond time for the Australian Government and the international community to uphold its commitments, ensure accountability for the crimes being committed during the conflict, and to realise the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and statehood.”
