Independent Member for Clark, Andrew Wilkie, seconded the Member for Mayo, Rebekha Sharkie’s, Interactive Gambling Amendment (Ban on Gambling Advertisements) Bill 2023.
“Australians are sick to death of gambling being promoted and normalised,” Mr Wilkie said. “Too often people, including children, are bombarded with targeted advertising campaigns on television, billboards and, worst of all, their phones. They are everywhere and are essentially grooming young people for future gambling addiction.
“Moreover, there is a widespread appetite in the community for reform that genuinely minimises the human cost of gambling addiction. I’ve heard hundreds of devastating stories from constituents about the toll it has on people’s finances, relationships and mental wellbeing.
“Why is it then that the Government remains beholden to gambling companies and continues to let gambling ads plague our society? This is why this Bill is urgently needed to help curb the negative impact gambling and gambling advertising has on people. It’s time for the Government to act and ban gambling advertising.”
