Independent Member for Clark, Andrew Wilkie, joined Greens Leader Cassy O’Connor MP to discuss the revelation that the Tasmanian greyhound industry is breeding more dogs than it needs for racing, in the full knowledge that some of the surplus dogs will not be rehomed but euthanised instead. He also discussed the revelation that the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) is fostering dogs still requiring muzzles because they have not completed the GAP program.
“It’s scandalous that Tasracing is knowingly breeding more greyhounds than it needs and is killing some of the surplus, most likely because they can’t run fast enough”, Mr Wilkie said.
“Greyhounds are sentient beings that should be treated with kindness and will inevitably respond in kind. To see them being treated as a commodity and discarded like the weekly rubbish is an appalling blight on both the State Government and the industry. In my opinion the Minister is useless and the industry should be banned.
“Moreover the revelation that GAP is fostering dogs still requiring muzzles, presumably in order to get more dogs out the door, points to a program in crisis that will do whatever it takes to help prop up the systemically cruel greyhound racing industry.”
