Mr Wilkie said the $380m extra funding for the Tasmanian education system between 2014 and 2019 was much needed.
“Tasmania faces some unique challenges and a needs-based funding model will deliver additional money where it will help most,” Mr Wilkie said.
“I am concerned, however, that the amount budgeted by the Federal Government for school funding reform is well short of what was recommended by David Gonski, and that a large part of what has been budgeted is funded by devastating cuts to the tertiary education sector.
“Australia is one of the richest countries in the world. We can afford good schools and good universities.
“The Federal Government should fund these education reforms fully and without ripping funds from universities and university students.”
