A statement regarding Glenorchy RSL’s bizarre claim that getting rid of pokies would be the end of ANZAC Day

The statement today by Glenorchy RSL that the removal of poker machines would result in the cancellation of ANZAC Day is ridiculous.

The fact is only two RSL clubs in Tasmania have poker machines. In other words virtually none have pokies but yet manage to commemorate ANZAC Day just fine. For example my own clubs, Lenah Valley RSL and the Taroona Ex-Services Club, don’t have pokies and they are the hub for vibrant and growing ANZAC Day events.

It’s also a fact that 40% of the money lost on poker machines is lost by gambling addicts. So if any pub or club is Tasmania is reliant on pokies for their very existence, then in effect they’re admitting their business models rely on gambling addiction.
