South Hobart arts centre opening a win for the community

The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, will attend the official opening of the South Hobart Living Arts Centre and be available for comment. Mr Wilkie secured $1.65m in federal funding in 2013 to convert the historic South Hobart Primary School into a community and cultural centre.

“I’m delighted to attend the opening of the new South Hobart Living Arts Centre,” Mr Wilkie said.

“I secured $1.65m for the project in 2013 after the South Hobart community had long been campaigning for the Federal Government to step in and save the building.

“The new Centre will be a vibrant community and cultural hub and a great asset for South Hobart. Moreover this beautiful Henry Hunter designed heritage building was at real risk of falling into disrepair or being snapped up by a corporate buyer so it’s good to see it in safe hands.

“I congratulate everyone who has worked hard to make this a reality, and particularly the South Hobart Progress Association who strongly campaigned for the project. It just goes to show that members of the community can have their voice heard in Canberra.”
