The Federal Government’s decision to grant approval to Tassal’s proposed salmon farm at Okehampton Bay is disappointing. By granting approval the Federal Government has ignored all the evidence which suggests that the farm will be bad for the environment and harmful to endangered species.
The ball is in the State Government’s court and they must listen to the community and stop the project from going ahead, instead of burying their heads in the sand and continuing to kowtow to Tassal.
The Tasmanian salmon industry has enormous potential but the community needs to have confidence that it is genuinely sustainable. Clearly allowing expansion into Okehampton Bay does not give the community this confidence.
