The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, will join the Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie and representatives of the Tasmanian rural sector to call for the backpacker tax to be axed.
“The backpacker tax is an ill-considered revenue measure,’’ Mr Wilkie said. “It will significantly reduce availability of labour for farmers, reduce the number of tourists coming to Australia and encourage tax avoidance.
“The problems with the tax will be felt nationally but hit Tasmania especially hard. Tasmanian farmers have a disproportionate reliance on seasonal workers and the broader state economy is underpinned by tourism. The logical conclusion is that the backpacker tax would be bad for Australia, and even worse for the island state.’’
