The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, discussed the decision to increase Australia’s commitment to the war in Afghanistan.
“Either the Government thinks reinforcing defeat in Afghanistan is somehow a good idea, which would be ridiculous, or more likely it puts our relationship with the United States ahead of the lives of Australian soldiers,” Mr Wilkie said.
“The fact is the war in Afghanistan was lost long ago and Australia really should get out of the place and let it find its natural political level.
“Moreover the main reason Australia faces an increased threat of terrorism is because of our involvement in these faraway places. Sending more troops there just throws more fuel on the fire. Frankly the only decision the Government should be making is to withdraw the troops.”
