The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, has urged Prime Minister Tony Abbott to follow the Pope’s expected call for humanity to act to curb climate change.
According to a leaked draft of a papal encyclical, Pope Francis is poised to state climate change is largely a man-made problem and warn failing to act will lead to “grave consequences’’ for the world.
The Pontiff is reported to have written that “humanity is called to take note of the need for changes in lifestyle and changes in methods of production and consumption to combat this warming, or at least the human causes that produce and accentuate it’’.
Mr Wilkie said the Pope was also expected to single out climate change deniers as standing in the way of a solution.
“If Tony Abbott won’t listen to the science, I only hope that he will listen to the leader of his church and see the light on climate change,’’ Mr Wilkie said.
“Climate change is a very real threat and must be addressed. As a high-emitting nation Australia must play a leadership role in global efforts to reduce carbon pollution.’’
