Last night I attended the Taroona Primary School emergency meeting that discussed the impending staff and funding cuts.
There were a lot of people at the meeting and they were shocked and anxious. Some were angry, and rightfully so.
The outpouring of public concern that was demonstrated last night reflects the madness of the State Government’s decision to cut school staff and other funding.
The Government’s decision will diminish the public education system and the community knows it. Class sizes will increase, programs and services will be cut and kids with special needs will be even further disadvantaged. That’s a fact and for the Government to claim otherwise is breathtakingly dishonest.
No public servant needs to be sacked against their will right now. And in any case all coal face positions should be carefully quarantined from cuts, in particular teachers, as well as all categories of emergency service personnel including nurses, police, ambos and firies.
Frankly this State Government has turned out to be a miserable piece of work with little understanding of the public interest. Shame on them.
