A STATEMENT ON PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE RET

22 October 2014

The Government’s decision to mandate a real and substantial cut to Australia’s Renewable Energy Target shows an appalling disregard for the environment and Australia’s long term economic self-interest. It also shows again just how beholden the Abbott Government is to the fossil fuel industry.

The fact is fossil fuels are dirty, diminishing and not the basis for the future global economy.

This is an especially hard blow for Tasmania with its abundance of renewable energy and potential to produce so much more. It would seem to disadvantage the Hobart zinc works and Bell Bay aluminium smelter in particular which should have an input cost advantage due to their disproportionate access to hydroelectricity. Heaven knows what Tasmania’s federal Liberal parliamentarians are thinking to support such a damaging decision.

Regrettably the Abbott Government is living in the industrial revolution when it comes to energy policy and we all, and our children, are paying the price.
