The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, spoke in the Parliament about the situation facing older Australians. He will refer to the most recent Sunday Tasmanian newspaper that revealed the shocking extent to which Tasmanian pensioners are struggling.
“Older Australians are getting a raw deal from this Government,” Mr Wilkie said.
“The Sunday Tasmanian revealed that 74% of Tasmanian pensioners run out of money each fortnight and 63% go without necessities including fresh food. This is unacceptable.
“Alarmingly four out of five pensioners said that they were frightened about being caught up in the Centrelink debt recovery program which is terrorising older Australians.
“The Government is waging a ruthless campaign against older Australians and last week’s Sunday Tasmanian should be read by all parliamentarians, and especially the Prime Minister and Treasurer.”
