The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, received a petition from a group of Denison residents calling on the Federal Government to take stronger action on climate change.
“Climate change is real and dangerous,” Mr Wilkie said. “And Australia’s response, especially under the current federal government, is grossly inadequate.”
“We need to move as soon as possible towards zero net carbon emissions and zero reliance on fossil fuels. That’s why I’ve called on the Government and the Opposition to commit to both by 2030.
“Signing up to the Paris Agreement is a good start, but unless the Government has a serious plan to achieve these targets then it will be too little, too late.
“I am grateful to receive the Community Climate Petition and will seek to table it in Parliament as soon as possible. This is an issue that a great many constituents care about and so their concerns should be heard in the Parliament.”
The Community Climate Petition is an initiative of a number of faith-based organisations calling on the Australian government to tackle climate change. More information is available at http://www.micahaustralia.org/climate-petition.
